The new Chair of IEC TC 21: Secondary cells and batteries, Herbert Giess, is a highly respected specialist in lead acid battery technology as well as in battery operation support for renewable energy storage systems. His skills have led him to already chair TC 21 from 2006 to 2009.
He was Working Group leader for the establishment of IEC 61427-1 and IEC 61427-2 which specify the requirements for batteries used in renewable energy storage, both in off-grid and on-grid situations. He also lead the standardization work which gave way to IEC 60896-21 and IEC 60896-22 on valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries. In 2004, he was given the Batteries International Silver Award for Most Outstanding Contributor cross the entire industry.
His involvement with IEC standardization dates back to to the early 1990s. His current activities as a consultant include battery failure analysis, production facility audits, battery standards compliance testing and evaluation, VLRA product design and customizing, to name but a few. Giess is a member of the Swiss National Committee.
