Johan J. Smit is the new Chair of IEC Technical Committee (TC) 112: Evaluation and qualification of electrical insulating materials and systems. He is a leading R&D expert in electrical power systems and cryogenic insulation.
Throughout his career, he has been involved in high-level research into power systems and new technologies such as nanocomposites and nanofluids, flexibility in power systems, intelligence in energy systems and robust smart grids. He was head of Delft University of Technology’s High Voltage Laboratory, one of the largest research labs in Europe.
He is very actively involved with CIGRE, the global community committed to the collaborative development and sharing of power system expertise, as International Counsel on Large Electric Systems, where he coordinates R&D with the power industry. As part of CIGRE, he organized task forces to write visionary reports such as “Electrical Power Systems of 2020”.
Inside IEC TC 112, he is Convenor of Working Group 6 on general methods of evaluation of electrical insulation. He is also the official liaison member with the CIGRE D1 Study Committee dealing with materials and emerging test techniques. He will remain Chair of IEC TC 112 until September 2024.
